On Friday morning, George and I took a nice casual early morning stroll to GAME where I picked up my Wii along with some games and accessories (no component cables though). After a quick visit to Starbucks and a small hunt for a taxi we were back in the flat setting it up.
First port of call was setting up the wireless on it which involved waiting for two system updates to download and install which wasn't the most exciting of starts. We then entered the Mii channel to make mini versions of ourselves before trying out Wii Sports.
Wii Sports is a great showcase of what the new controller can do and within minutes George and I were jumping around the room playing tennis (remember to use those wrist straps kids) and then throwing virtual balls at virtual pins in bowling. At this point George had to go take Pepper to get spayed so I decided to look into the system a bit more.
Unfortunately the promised weather, news and internet browsing channels were not available at launch so I decided to take a nosey around the shopping channel. After entering the code from my Wii Points card (which was wastefully over packaged) I had 2000 points to play with. I purchased Super Mario 64 for 1000 points which equals around £7.50 in real money. I new entry appeared in my channel list and with a quick click of the Wiimote I was back in 1997. I had purchased the classic controller which works very well with Super Mario 64. It's like a SNES pad but with two nice analogue sticks in the middle.
George returned from the vet so I stopped playing Mario and put Red Steel in. It didn't go well. To be honest it seemed like an unplayable mess and so it was soon ripped from the Wii and replaced with Zelda (over the weekend I've gone back to Red Steel and once you get the hang of the controls it isn't too bad)
Zelda is every bit as good as I'd hoped and is the game I'll be spending most of my time with over the next few weeks. I've played it for around 8 hours now and I feel like I've only just scratched the surface.
The rest of my Wii time has been spent making Miis along with sending/receiving them to/from the people I've added to my Wii address book via WiiConnect24 and getting to grips with WiiPlay.
All told I'm pleased with my purchase and look forward to seeing what developers can do with the machine in the coming year (see -> Nintendo DS). Now the hunt for component cables begins.
Thar be no comments yet matey. Insert words to get the pirate treasure. Yarr!
